From January 8, 2025, tourists wishing to visit the United Kingdom must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This new requirement will apply to tourist visits as well as business or family stays and is being implemented to strengthen the country’s immigration control.

What is the ETA?

The ETA is an electronic permit that authorizes entry into the United Kingdom for short stays of up to six months. This system is similar to the U.S. ESTA and will be mandatory even for those simply transiting through UK airports. The cost of the ETA will be £10 and it will be valid for two years or until the associated passport expires.

How to Apply for the ETA?

The ETA application process will be entirely digital and can be completed through the official UK Government website or via the UK ETA app. To apply, you will need:

  • A valid passport.
  • A recent digital photograph.
  • A payment method to cover the fee.

The application process takes about 10 to 15 minutes, and a response is expected within three working days. However, it is recommended to complete the process in advance to avoid any issues.

Who Needs the ETA?

The list of countries whose citizens will need this authorization includes Spain, the United States, and others. The requirement will be gradually implemented, with new countries added before its full enforcement in the spring of 2025.

What About Layovers?

Even travelers transiting through UK airports will need an ETA, adding an extra step for those planning connecting flights in the United Kingdom.

This new system aims to ensure stricter security controls before individuals begin their journey, helping to prevent misuse of the UK’s immigration system.
