For a foreign professional to work in Spain, it’s essential to have the right permit. But not all permits that allow you to work are labeled as “work permits.” Some residence permits without work authorization still allow you to engage in employment legally.

Residence Permits Without Work

Several types of residence permits don’t require formal work authorization but still enable you to work in Spain. Here are the main ones:

The residence permits without work are as follows:

  • Residence Permit for Family Reunification for the Spouse or Domestic Partner: If you’re reunited with your spouse or partner, you can work in Spain—whether employed or self-employed—without needing any additional administrative steps. However, if your job is long-term and your earnings surpass the Minimum Interprofessional Wage, you’ll need to apply for an individual work permit.
  • Residence Permit for Family Reunification for Descendants:If you meet the age requirements, you can also work legally, without further paperwork. Since this permit isn’t permanent, we recommend applying for an individual permit once your professional activity becomes stable and financially independent.
  • Residence Permit for Family Members of EU Citizens (Spouse or Partner): As the spouse or partner of an EU citizen, you’re allowed to work as either an employee or self-employed, except for certain jobs reserved for EU citizens.
  • Residence Permit for Family Members of EU Citizens (Descendants and Ascendants): Children over 21 and parents of EU citizens may only work under strict conditions. Employment should not affect their dependent status, and they can only work if the income is not essential for their support. The work contract should be temporary and not show long-term commitment in the labor market.
  • Student Permit for Health Sector Specialization: If you hold a recognized medical, pharmaceutical, or nursing degree, you can work in specialized health training positions without needing additional work authorization. However, you’ll need to notify the relevant immigration office about your employment status.
