Starting January 8, 2025, tourists wishing to visit the United Kingdom will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This new requirement will affect both tourist visits and business or family stays, and it will be implemented to strengthen the country’s immigration control.

What is the ETA?

The ETA is an electronic permit that allows entry to the United Kingdom for short stays of up to six months. This system is similar to the U.S. ESTA and will be mandatory even for those merely transiting through British airports. The ETA will cost £10 and will be valid for two years or until the expiration of the associated passport.

How to Apply for the ETA?

The ETA application process will be completely digital and can be completed through the official UK government website or via the UK ETA app. To apply, you will need:

  • A valid passport.
  • A recent digital photograph.
  • A payment method to cover the fee.

The application process takes between 10 and 15 minutes, and a response is expected within three business days. However, it is recommended to complete the process in advance to avoid any issues.

Who Needs the ETA?

The list of countries whose citizens need to apply for this authorization includes Spain and the United States, among others. The requirement will be rolled out gradually, with additional countries being added before it becomes fully mandatory in spring 2025.

What About Layovers?

Even travelers transiting through British airports will need an ETA, adding an extra step for those planning connecting flights in the United Kingdom.

This new system aims to ensure stricter security checks before travelers begin their journeys, helping to prevent abuse of the UK’s immigration system.
