On April 2, 2025, a new requirement came into effect for those traveling to the UK for short visits: the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). In this post, we will cover the key aspects of this permit. However, if you are specifically interested in information about short-term work travel, we recommend watching our February webinar in collaboration with the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain.

What is the ETA?

On April 2, the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) came into effect. This electronic permit authorizes entry into the UK for short stays of up to six months. The system is similar to the U.S. ESTA and is mandatory even for those transiting through British airports. This travel authorization was already required for citizens of certain countries, and now it applies to all Europeans as well.

❌ The ETA does not authorize work in the UK. Those traveling for work or study purposes must obtain a visa. The UK Government website provides a portal where travelers can check whether they need a visa and the conditions for obtaining one.

Are there any exceptions?

You do not need an ETA if you have a valid UK visa or a permit to live, work, or study in the country. British and Irish citizens are also exempt.

How do I apply for an ETA?

🔹 The ETA application process is fully digital and can be completed through the official UK Government website or via the ETA mobile application. Applications have been available since March 5, 2025. The ETA is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. A fee is required.

This system applies to citizens of countries currently eligible for visa-free short stays in the UK. This includes European Union citizens, as well as those from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries.

What do I need to Apply for an ETA?

The current cost of the ETA is £10 (approximately €12). However, the UK Government has announced a price increase to £15 (€19) from April 9, 2025. Please note that the fee is non-refundable if the application is denied. To apply, you need:

    • A valid passport.
    • A recent digital photograph.
    • A payment method to cover the application fee.

The application process takes 10 to 15 minutes, and applicants typically receive a response within three working days. However, it is recommended to apply well in advance to avoid any travel disruptions. Obtaining an ETA does not guarantee entry—you must still pass border control upon arrival in the UK.

How Does This Affect Businesses?

Companies sending employees to the UK must ensure that their workers comply with all legal requirements, including obtaining an ETA. Additionally, it is essential to check whether the purpose of the trip requires an additional visa. Still have questions?
