The past Tuesday, February 11th, in collaboration with the British Chamber of Commerce in Spain, we hosted a webinar on short-term worker mobility. Our talent and mobility specialist, Iván Boumakhrouta, summarized the key aspects that companies need to know about this topic in under 60 minutes. He also explained a new figure that will come into effect on April 2, 2025, for those traveling to the United Kingdom for a short-term visit: the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).

More information

What is the ETA?

The ETA is an electronic authorization that allows entry to the United Kingdom for short stays of up to six months. This system is similar to the U.S. ESTA and will be mandatory even for those only transiting through UK airports. This travel authorization is already required for people from other countries, and as of April 2, it will also apply to all Europeans. Travelers entering the United Kingdom before April 2, 2025, and staying beyond that date for a short-term visit will not need this authorization.

The electronic travel authorization does not authorize working in the United Kingdom. Those traveling for work or study will need a visa. On the UK government website, there is a portal where you can check if a visa is required and the conditions for obtaining it.

How do I apply for the ETA?

The ETA application process will be completely digital and can be completed through the ETA application on the official UK government website. The electronic travel authorization can be requested starting March 5, 2025. A fee must be paid. The authorization is valid for 2 years or until the passport expires, if it expires before 2 years.

This system is aimed at citizens of countries that currently do not need a visa to visit the UK for short stays. This includes citizens of the European Union, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries.

✅ What do I need?

To apply, you need a valid passport, a recent digital photo, and a payment method to cover the fee. The application process takes between 10 and 15 minutes, and a response is expected within three business days. However, it is recommended to complete the process in advance to avoid any issues.
